Geological Drilling
We specialize in obtaining geological information in
Dolomite formations, mainly in the Centurion and surrounding areas but undertake projects all over South Africa. Our drilling equipment is capable of extracting accurate samples, especially in circumstances of unstable Dolomite where sample loss may occur. At JK Drilling we are normal percussion and reverse circulation (RC) sample extraction and logging experts.
Work Process
1: Preperation
The exact point of penetration where the drilling will take place is identified. Our seasoned personnel accurately position the Thor 5000 percussion drill rig to prepare for drilling. Thereafter the drill rig is secured by pushing out hydraulic jacks to level it and to ensure that it will not fall over during the drilling process. The rig is then started up, equipped with Atlas Copco compressors and driven by Cummins engines, mounted on Powerstar chassis. Our drill rigs are capable of using up to 25 bar pressure although 17-18 bar is the normal specifications for dolomite areas.
2: Sampling
The boom containing the string rods is erected and the hammer is lowered onto the spot where the hole will be drilled. The rods are marked at the required intervals and a sample removed with a spade from the material that is blown upwards. These samples are placed in order of retrieval on the ground, and identification tags are attached. After completion all these properly tagged samples, are placed into a long plastic tube and removed from site. During this process a logbook is kept logging the type of soil retrieved, penetration times and all other information required.
3: Plugging
After the drill equipment is removed, a team shovels the extracted material back into the hole filling it up in this way. The last 50 centimeters is filled up with soilcrete and sealed with a concrete cap to ensure a watertight plug. The site is cleaned and all loose soil distributed evenly to ensure that the environment is not disturbed.
Sinkhole Repair
Repairing sinkholes in dolomite formations can be a complex and specialized process due to the unique characteristics of dolomite rock. Here are three general steps involved in repairing sinkholes in dolomite formations.
Work Process
Assessment and Stabilization
Begin with a thorough assessment of the sinkhole's size and risks. Stabilize it promptly by filling it with specialized grout or cement to prevent further collapse.
Grouting and Void Filling
Inject specific mixtures into the underground voids within the dolomite rock to reinforce it. Continuously monitor the process for effectiveness.
Restoration and Prevention
Repair surface damage and implement preventive measures like managing water flow and land use to avoid future sinkholes. in the area.
